Some 14,000 military personnel were deployed near the conflictive Colombia-Venezuela crossing in Cucuta on Wednesday to increase government control of the area, after being closed since February 2019 by the Venezuelan government.

The border crossing has been a hot spot where armed groups compete for control of cocaine production, as well as a porous migration border from Venezuela to Colombia.

Numbers increased with the arrival of COVID-19 to South America.

President Ivan Duque was also due in the area to commemorate 200 years of the Constitution of Cucuta, along with the Presidential Commissioner for Foreign Relations, Julio Borges.
