Cyprus: Pope Francis meets with president Anastasiades in first visit of eastern Mediterranean tour

Pope Francis met with Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades in Nicosia on Thursday at the presidential palace. The Pope gave a speech praising the history of the nation during the event.

“You [Cyprus] are an open door, a port that links people together. Cyprus, a crossroads of civilisations, bears within itself an innate vocation to encounter, fostered by the welcoming character of Cypriots,” stated Pope Francis.

This is Pope Francis’ first stop in a small tour of the eastern Mediterranean countries where he will be traveling to Cyprus and Greece from December 2-6.

“It is a joy for me to traverse the history and soul of this land during these days, with its desire that is yearning for unity, its message of beauty will continue to guide its path. Long live Cyprus,” concluded Pope Francis.
