Czech Republic: Hotheads brave icy waters of Vltava River in traditional post-Christmas dip

Several dozen hardy swimmers ventured into the ice-cold waters of the Vltava River in Prague on Sunday to partake in the 75th traditional post-Christmas dip.

Alongside the medieval Charles Bridge, swimmers plunged into the river with nothing but bathing suits in sub-zero temperatures.

The event took place in track lengths between 328 ft (100 m), and 2,460 ft (750 m) swims indicated by large buoys floating in the water.

The daredevil cold water swimming event commemorates the life of Alfred Nikodem, a Prague businessman and pioneer of winter swimming.

Niokdem first dove into the freezing Vltava River in 1923 as a shocked crowd observed from afar, initiating an annual tradition in the Czech capital.
