Underwater footage shows sockeye salmon struggling to keep swimming in Columbia River on Friday, July 16, as the water exceeded 21 degrees Celsius (71 degrees F).

The fish appeared visibly in distress due to the heat and presented dramatic lesions and fungus induced by thermal stress, in the video captured at the Little White Salmon River in the Columbia River Gorge.

The legal limit set by scientists to protect salmon from unsafe temperatures is 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees F).

Dammed rivers can cause stagnant hot waters, and together with climate change, scientists predict that the effect will continue to be deadlier for the fish.
