Leader of Germany’s Free Democratic Party (FDP), Christian Linder, spoke at a 2021 federal election campaign event in Berlin on Sunday.
According to Linder, the ‘starting point’ of ‘all democratic politics’ must be the ‘dignity and freedom of every single individual.’
The FDP leader hit back at the agenda of the Greens, accusing them of wanting to “imprint a different lifestyle onto people” under the pretext of carbon dioxide emission reductions.
Linder also highlighted that the CDU’s (Christian Democratic Union) position in this year’s election was ‘surprisingly weak,’ however, noted that they were the closest candidate to the FDP if things came to a potential coalition scenario.
While recognising the “impressive election campaign” of Socialist Democratic Party (SPD) candidate Olaf Scholz, Linder accused Scholz of hiding co-leader and the deputy chair of his party in the process.
The FDP is likely to be a key party in this federal election, with the possibility of a traffic light coalition alongside the SPD and Greens that could force the CDU out of government for the first time in nearly two decades.
Germany’s federal election is scheduled to take place on September 26.

SOT, Christian Linder, Leader at Free Democratic Party (FDP) (German): “One thing has to be consistent, what is changing and what has to change. The starting point and at the same time the aim, of all democratic politics, must constantly be the dignity and freedom of every single individual.”
SOT, Christian Linder, Leader at Free Democratic Party (FDP) (German): “When they (the Green Party) are speaking about climate protection, than they are not just thinking about CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) savings, but for them it is more a cultural question, as they don’t just want to save CO2, but also want to imprint a different lifestyle onto people.”
SOT, Christian Linder, Leader at Free Democratic Party (FDP) (German): “On the one side we have CSU/CDU (Christian Social Union / Christian Democratic Union) who are surprisingly weak and their content is unclear, maybe the two are connected, but nevertheless the CSU/CDU are closer to us than anybody else.”
SOT, Christian Linder, Leader at Free Democratic Party (FDP) (German): “And on the other hand are the Social Democrats and it is has to be said free of envy, Olaf Scholz (Social Democratic Party candidate) has succeeded in an impressive election campaign, he succeeded in the last few weeks to hide the virtues of Saskia Esken (Social Democratic Party co-chair) and Kevin Kuhnert (Social Democratic Party deputy chair) from the public.”
SOT, Christian Linder, Leader at Free Democratic Party (FDP) (German): “The CSU/CDU has the more solid coalition options, while on the other hand the SPD (Social Democratic Party) and the Greens are depending on the Left Party. A party who has a socialist democracy [view] in their program. The last attempt of social democracy was in Venezuela and is not recommended to be tried out in Germany.”
SOT, Christian Linder, Leader at Free Democratic Party (FDP) (German): “But a party, who is refusing soldiers their deployment approval in a dangerous rescue mission (Afghanistan evacuation) and letting them down, such a party should not be allowed to gain any power over this government.”
