Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader and chancellor candidate Armin Laschet went canvassing door-to-door in Berlin’s Kladow district on Saturday.
Laschet’s visit came after he kicked off the Union bloc’s official electoral campaign alongside Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin’s Tempodrom. He was joined by Berlin’s CDU chairman Kai Wegner and Bundestag candidate for Berlin-Spandau Joe Chialo as he met with locals.
The 60 year-old politician, who is the current Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, was chosen as the CDU’s lead candidate in April and has faced repeated criticism from within his own party amid a slump in the polls for the Union.
Germany is set to go to the polls on Sunday, September 26, with Politico’s Poll of Polls placing the Union on 24 percent, with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) on 20, while the Greens sit at 18.
