A dog born with half a spine was dumped because of his birth defect. Cooper is an American foxhound. Back in 2017, when he was just two months old, animal control workers found him abandoned not far from a puppy mill in Halifax, Virginia. The Secondhand Hounds in Minnetonka, Minnesota took Cooper in and treated him for a hernia, ear mites, and worms. He was also diagnosed with an extremely rare birth defect called “short spine syndrome.” It’s caused by inbreeding and in Cooper’s case, caused his vertebrae to compress and fuse, leaving him with a body that’s about half the typical size. A loving family adopted him and he has shown them time and time again he also has a whole lot of love to give. Sure, he has some trouble walking on hard surfaces, but he can still do all kinds of usual dog things.
