Drone captures thousands of steel panels rusting in Texas as border wall contracts cancelled

Thousands of steel panels, once intended for the US-Mexico border wall and estimated to be worth $100 million, have been left to rust.

US President Joe Biden has cancelled several contracts for the construction that was heavily promoted by former president Donald Trump. Instead, the Biden administration announced it would ‘begin environmental planning’ and use funds for ‘innovative border security technology’.

Drone footage shows that currently the construction material lies around abandoned. A portion of the US border wall was also damaged after severe flooding in August following monsoon rains. Parts of it near the town of Douglas now appear to be rotting away.

The construction of the wall cost up to $46 million per mile. In June, the White House pulled more than $2 billion of funding from the border wall and returned it to the military.
