Clashes erupted on Friday as Israeli security forces prevented Palestinians from entering Al-Yusufiya cemetery located along the walls of the old city of Jerusalem.

Israeli security forces were seen preventing visitors from entering the cemetery, firing tear gas at Palestinian protestors, and arresting some of them. An Israeli worker was also seen setting up a metal fence on the cemetery’s fence.

According to reports, dozens of Palestinians suffered breathing difficulties due to heavy tear gas deployed by Israeli security forces.

Earlier this week, Israeli bulldozers carried out digging works at the cemetery in order to turn it into a park.

The Council of Endowments and Islamic Affairs and Holy Places in Jerusalem condemned the Israeli digging works, dubbing it as an attempt to “obliterate the history of the holy city and its genuine Arabic trait, and to change the current historical status for the city before it was occupied in 1967.”
