Dozens of protesters gathered outside the National Assembly in Quito to follow a parliamentary vote on a regulation that would allow abortion in regards to cases of rape, on Thursday.
Footage shows pro-abortion demonstrators holding signs and banners as they rallied outside the building. At the same time, an anti-abortion group expressed their opposition to the legislation.
The regulation under debate considers the limit for the practice of abortion to be 12 weeks of gestation for women over 18 years of age, while for minors and women living in rural areas the limit will be extended to 18 weeks.
“This is a law that excludes, leaves out and subjects thousands of women, girls and pregnant women to the torture of forced maternity or clandestine abortion. We, the victims and survivors of rape, are here to say that we will continue to be vigilant and demand that a just and restorative law is passed,” said Ana Cristina Vera, representative of the Surkuna movement.
The National Assembly approved the regulation by 75 votes in favour, 41 against and 14 abstentions. The regulation could still potentially be vetoed by President of the Republic, Guillermo Lasso.
