A Femen activist posed shirtless outside the Collegiate Church in Madrid, on Tuesday, denouncing the risks of clandestine abortions as the Spanish government considers reforms to expand abortion access.
The activist wore a crown of flowers and held two wreaths as she had the message “clandestine abortions kill” written on her chest. The short action took place at the busiest time.
Abortions are legal for any reason up to 14 weeks, and are possible up to the 22nd week if the mother’s health is at risk or in cases of serious fetal abnormalities. However, many Spanish doctors refuse to provide abortion services, calling themselves conscientious objectors, making the procedure difficult to access in large parts of the country.
In September, the equality ministry announced a planned reform to abortion laws, limiting the right for doctors to refuse the procedure.
