The leader of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Ghebreyesus, announced a plan to introduce a global agreement on preventing and controlling future pandemics in Geneva on Wednesday, after a three-day special hybrid session of the governing body amid the new Omicron variant.

“I welcome the decision you have adopted today to establish an intergovernmental negotiating body (INB) to draft and negotiate a WHO convention agreement or other international instruments on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response,” highlighted the WHO chief Tedros Ghebreyesus.

The pact seeks to improve setbacks the world has had to face during the latest of the COVID-19 pandemic, including data sharing, technology know-how, and increased testing, sequencing and reporting.

Tedros delivered the speech on December 1, marking World AIDS Day, stating that after 40 years, no vaccine was available for the disease, and highlighted that in only two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, several vaccines and treatments were available against the virus.

The WHO chief warned that the virus has proved that it will not “simply disappear” and added, “Ending the pandemic is not a matter of chance; it’s a matter of choice.”

“End this pandemic,” urged Tedros.
