Director-general of the World Health Organisation Tedros Adhanom commented on the current situation with the spread of COVID-19 in the world on the second day of the International Olympic Committee Session in Tokyo, Wednesday.

“The pandemic is a test and the world is failing. More than four million people have died and more continue to die. Already this year, the number of deaths is more than double last year’s total. In the time it takes me to make these remarks, more than 100 people will lose their lives to COVID-19,” he said.

“And by the time the Olympic flame is extinguished on the 8th of August, more than 100,000 more people will perish,” concluded Adhanom.

The 2020 summer Olympic Games will be held in Japan between July 23 and August 8 after being postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
