Japan: Demo against upcoming Olympics hits Kyoto fuelled by fears of COVID spread

Crowds of Kyoto locals took the streets on Monday to call on the government to prioritise the health of its citizens over the hosting of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Protesters carried various flags while marching and chanting in the streets. One protester Tatsuya Naka said that hosting the Olympics in the current situation of Japan’s COVID-19 outbreak might cause variants to spread in the country. Ken Tajikawa, another protester, said “the Suga administration only talks about the Olympics, but they don’t try to protect lives and livelihoods, and they continue to violate the constitution. I will do my best to deliver the message of compliance with the constitution to the world.”

The 2020 summer Olympic Games will be held in Japan between July 23 and August 8 after being postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
