Japan: IOC head Bach meets Tokyo Gov Yuriko ahead of Olympics start in 8 days

With the Tokyo Olympic Games just eight days away, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach spoke with Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko in Tokyo on Thursday.

“We and the Olympic community here wanted to contribute to the safety of these Games and we want to avoid any kind of risk ever possible for the people of Tokyo and the people of Japan,” said Bach.

The meeting with the governor comes a day after officials announced that only three cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed among more than 8,000 people involved in the Games who travelled to Japan between July 1-13.

“We can be now [sic] eight days from the Opening Ceremony and thanks to the efforts of so many, but in particular, the people of Tokyo and the many unsung heroes from Tokyo: the medical people, the nurses and so many others, but also all the people of Tokyo who are respecting the strict rules which have been established here in order to contain the virus,” commented Bach.

Amid protests against the Olympics and a rise in COVID-19 cases within Japan, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declared another state of emergency in Tokyo until August 22. This decision means no fans, not even local Japanese attendees, will be able to watch the games.

The 2020 Summer Olympics are set to begin July 23 and go until August 8, after being postponed last year due to the global pandemic.
