International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach held a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide to discuss the Olympic Games 2020 and the COVID situation around it in Tokyo on Wednesday.
“We have been informed there by the [Tokyo 2020] Organising Committee just today, that there were only three positive cases [of COVID-19] and that they have been isolating and their close contacts are under the relevant quarantine regime. So, there you can see that the system is working and is enforced,” stated Bach.
During the meeting the IOC was informed by the Olympics Organising Committee about the more than 8,000 people involved in the Games who have travelled to Japan between the dates of July 1-13.
All arrivals went through the Tokyo 2020 screening testing regime, and all underwent tests and health checks. Only three tested positive for COVID-19 after arrival and are currently in isolation.
With the Games just nine days away, set to begin on on July 23, the COVID situation related to the games is ever changing. The meeting was also attended by Tokyo 2020 President Hashimoto Seiko.
