Around 400 homeless people set up tents in Paris’ Place des Vosges on Thursday to ask for decent accommodation.

In total, some 300 tents were installed in the famous square in a bid to shed light on the homelessness issue. The action was organised by Collectif Requisitions, which brings together several associations, including Utopia 56, solidarity migrants Wilson and others.

Jean-Baptiste Eyraud, a member of the Droit au Logement association, said, “We couldn’t leave them like that, so we brought them together to make this problem more visible and so that above all they get accommodation.”

According to local media, association representatives said they are planning on staying until a shelter solution is found.

SO, Yann Manzi, Co-founder of Utopia 56 association (French): “There are human rights, today they are flouted in some countries, in France they are quite violently despised even if we make people believe that we are doing things well. The reality that we see is that fundamental rights and human rights are increasingly being devastated, misunderstood and all these populations are the witnesses of it”.

SOT, Anicette, Homeless person arriving from Italy after fleeing Ivory Coast (French): “I think that even if I have Italian documents, I am a mother, I am a human being, they should not be based on the fact that I have European documents not to welcome me.”

SOT, Ladji, Homeless asylum seeker from Ivory Coast (French): “France is the land of dreams for many of us with the threats happening in Africa. Here we have protection, here French law we do not know it well but we trust it.”

SOT, Jean-Baptiste Eyraud, Member of the Droit au Logement association (French): “We cannot leave them like that, so we brought them together to shed light on this problem and so that above all they get accommodation. We also want this right to accommodation to apply and to be respected for all people homeless because the street is death.”
