A brawl broke out between attendees at a rally for far-right French presidential candidate Eric Zemmour, in Villepinte, on Sunday, as several hundred supporters waited for his arrival.
According to attendees, the brawl started when people attending the rally protested Zemmour and denounced racism.
“A row in front of us, there were many men that stood up to show their ‘No to racism’ t-shirts. It escalated all of a sudden and there was a stampede and we all thought we were going to be crushed,” said one of the attendees. “It was a group of people pretending to be activists but they were just here for trouble.”
One of the Zemmour protesters said, “We are convinced anti-racists. We just came to say that not everybody agreed [with Zemmour] and we wanted to peacefully oppose this meeting.”
Police officers escorted injured people outside after attendees were seen throwing chairs and punching people in the crowd.

SOT, Injured protester (French): “We are convinced anti-racists. We just came to say that not everybody agreed [with Zemmour] and we wanted to peacefully oppose this meeting. We had t-shirts that have just now taken off to avoid being beaten up again. I did not know it would be like that. I was not aware of the risks and thought we were in a democracy, so that we could say what we had to say without physical consequences. We are pacific activists. I am surprised.”

SOT, Visitor (French): “My parents will kill me. Mummy, daddy, I am sorry, I should have listened to you.

SOT, Journalist (French): “Do you feel vulnerable?” SOT, Visitor (French): “No.” SOT, Journalist (French): “What do you feel now?”

SOT, Visitor (French): “I do not know, proud.”

SOT, Visitor (French): “We took off our pullovers to show our t-shirts which together could form the sentence ‘no to racism’. We did not move we just stood up madam.”

SOT, Visitor (French): “We stood up, we removed our pullover because under we had letters that formed the slogan ‘No to racism’, we raised our fists.”

SOT, Visitor (French): “A row in front of us, there were many men that stood up to show their ‘No to racism’ t-shirts. It escalated all of a sudden and there was a stampede and we all thought we were going to be crushed. So we had a little scare, we went out for a smoke and in the end that is it. There is more fear than harm.”

SOT, Visitor (French): “It was a group of people pretending to be activists but they were just here for trouble. More fear than harm.”

SOT, Journalist (French): “There were chairs that flew etc…”

SOT, Visitor (French): “This we did not see this. Just a little fight.” SOT, Visitor (French): “It was impressive because all the security came in and you wonder what’s happening. So yes just a scare. We are safe and sound.”
