France: Die-in staged on Calais beach in protest over Channel crossing migrant deaths

A die-in was staged on a beach in Calais on Sunday in protest against Channel crossing migrant deaths and the immigration policies of the French authorities.
The die-in was preceded by a march through the city and a rally held on the beach.
“We are here to denounce the policies in relation to borders, which cause people to lose their lives trying to cross them,” commented Ludovic Holbein, a protester.
The protest occurs a few days after French President Emmanuel Macron announced a push to strengthen the European Union’s external borders against people illegally entering the EU.
“There is money invested in safety, but not in humanity. There is a lot of money invested, 170 million euros, financed by the English to secure the port: barriers, walls, cameras, but for humanity there is nothing,” noted Pascal Lefevre, another protester.
Macron is also pushing for the creation of a ‘rapid reaction force’ to protect EU member states against migrants.
According to the Missing Migrants Project by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 45 migrants were recorded as missing in the English Channel in 2021.
