The European Union and French officials pledged more financial support for African nations in their fight against pandemic and ahead of the EU-Africa summit during a press conference in Lyon on Wednesday.
“We want France and the European Union to be a global hub for health cooperation. This strengthening and architecture redefining that we want to contribute to will be a key element in it,” French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian explained in reference to helping poorer nations overcome health challenges.
The financial support to the continent was further confirmed by Stella Kyriakides, the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety who stated: “We have already launched a 100 million euro (114 million US dollars) initiative to support vaccine deployment in Africa with an additional 125 million in funding for African countries for vaccination training, medical equipment and sequencing.”
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, had previously announced the 125 million euros (142,6 million US dollars) investment for vaccination programs in Africa during a visit to Senegal amid a low vaccination rate on the continent.

SOT, Jean-Yves Le Drian, French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs (French): “For starters, we want to strengthen the European strategy in terms of international health by including the lessons that we’ve learned from the pandemic with the objective of giving the European Union a spot in international health management given its financial contributions to it. We also reiterated our collective commitment to support poorer countries in their response to the pandemic. We know that solidarity is needed also for our own security, we need to strengthen that solidarity and especially strengthen health services.” *MULTIPLE SHOTS AT SOURCE*

We also want to reiterate the key support and role of the European Union in the multilateral health architecture.
