France: Fishermen temporarily blockade Calais Port in UK fishing license row

Fishermen temporarily blocked the port of Calais on Friday, in protest of the UK’s refusal to issue more licenses to fish in British waters.

Participants could be seen tying protest banners to boat railings and lighting orange flares as they set sail to blockade the major trade route.

A DFDS and P&O ferry were reportedly held up during the protest, with the MarineTraffic app showing that they were forced to reduce their speed.

The French Maritime Minister has stated that about 150 French boats have been denied permits to operate in British waters.

Talks to resolve the post-Brexit row are in a stalemate, with the UK insisting that most applications for licenses have been granted.

So we hope that agreements made in January 2021 will be at last respected, like the authorization to fish in British waters. It has now been on the table for more than nine months, ten months now and it’s getting late. As mayor of Etaples-sur-Mer, I have a big fishing community, so my concern is all the families and the economic aspect of all of this.”

Today, it’s raising to another level and we decided to support them when they took the decision to block the port and lead some actions. It’s still very chill until now but it is very urgent to unlock this.”
