Myriam Pont, fisherwoman (French): “As soon as first responders show up, we have an idea of what happened, because unfortunately when a boat capsizes, rescuers have to bring them back here. But in this case there was panic in all directions, and we quickly started to get information on our apps and on the television and I’ll admit that when we were watching the news last night, I was saddened, because when you hear there were women, children – even men, human beings, young boys, who want to cross every day, it’s heartbreaking. It’s very heartbreaking because the only thing they want is to find peace, be well. They want to build a better world for themselves. That’s why they come here, because they have no other solution to cross, and once they’re in France, they put themselves in danger because I think they don’t know how dangerous the North Sea is. And England doesn’t accept them, and to leave people like that, is failing to help a person in danger. That’s dramatic. It’s serious.”
