France: Hundreds of protesters march in Paris against COVID-19 health pass

Hundreds of anti-health pass protesters marched through the streets of Paris on Tuesday.

Protesters, many of whom were members of the Yellow Vest movement, carried signs and chanted slogans such as: ‘The pass will not pass.’

“The health pass means that unfortunately, the government can afford to do anything they want. We have many worries because everything is allowed. I think this is the start of an obligation,” said Patrice, a protester.

Similar protests recently broke out in other cities across the country, as French authorities rolled out a new COVID-19 health pass amid a surge in infections.

According to a poll, 76 percent of the French people approve the decision by President Emmanuel Macron to make vaccination compulsory for health care workers and other professions. Since last week, people in France must show proof of vaccination, a negative test, or a recent recovery from COVID-19 to visit cultural venues and sports matches.

French lawmakers approved an extension of the health pass to bars and restaurants on Monday.

SOT, Patrice, Yellow vest protester (French): “The health pass means that unfortunately, the government can afford to do anything they want. We have many worries because everything is allowed. I think this is the start of an obligation. The government can decide which injections it wants you to do against different variants or different viruses that might reappear later, so it’s a start, but there will be no end. That’s what we must be aware of. We are against this health pass because it is inadmissible to accept to be rejected by society in the country in which we were born.”

SOT, Nathalie, Health administration employee (French): “It’s incredible. I never thought I’d see this (the health pass) one day in France. Honestly, I’m really scandalised. And then, what are we going to leave to our children? It is not possible. We cannot let that happen. No, no, we must not, we must move, we must realise what’s happening. It’s very serious what’s going on.”
