France: Judicial workers stage protest in day of nationwide strike action

Magistrates, lawyers and court clerks held a protest rally in Paris on Wednesday, as part of a nationwide strike action day.

The judicial workers, backed by trade unions and professional associations, are demanding better working conditions.

“The spontaneous, unprecedented, and very broad mobilization of all legal professionals is the reflection of a serious institutional crisis,” said SAF (French Union of Lawyers) spokesperson Laurence Roques.

“Justice has reached a breaking point after years of austerity policies. The diagnoses are shared by all, over and over again, and for years,” added Roques.

The suicide of Charlotte, a magistrate in the Pas-de-Calais, triggered the anger of the judicial world.

Political pressure has been escalating in France’s judicial sector. In November, a letter signed by 3,000 magistrates was published in a national newspaper after the suicide of a 29-year-old magistrate in the Nord-Pas de Calais region.

SOT, Lawyer (French): “It is extraordinary today to see magistrates and lawyers united for the same cause. Our objective is not corporatism, as we sometimes understand it, it is to give the litigant the certainty that justice is human, legal and above all listening to each other. For this, we will all fight together with the single objective of [a justice that’s] effective, just and humane.”

SOT, Spokesperson at AFMI (The French Association of Magistrates Instructors) (French): “We are 8,500 to 9,000 magistrates in France for 67 million French people. The number of magistrates has not increased for two centuries while the French population has doubled. How do you want it to work? We can fight over the figures but the facts are there. We are 9000 for 67 million French people. We cannot exercise our missions under these conditions. Investigating judges can no longer assume the missions which are theirs.”
