Mourners attended a funeral ceremony for Father Olivier Maire, a Catholic priest murdered on August 9, in Saint-Laurent-sur-Sevre, Friday.
“Obviously it’s a shock, to see the person, the priest with lots of charities, with lots of love, who welcomes you, who prepares you for your wedding and suddenly you understand that he was assassinated,” said Joel, a local.
The coffin with the body was carried into Lucon Cathedral with the family of the murdered priest and some mourners joining the ceremony in the cathedral behind closed doors. A screen was set up to broadcast the ceremony for guests mourning outside the cathedral.
“We are very sad, we do not know him personally but as a catholic person we should be here today,” said Mod, another local.
Police forces secured the entrance, checked bags, and surrounding streets. Police dogs were also deployed.
The priest, Father Olivier Maire, 60, was the head of the Montfortain Missionary Order and reportedly offered the suspect, a Rwandan immigrant, home while he was awaiting trial for arson.

SOT, Therese, Resident (French): “It is difficult, it is the man who set fire to the cathedral of Nantes, he was here in this village. I don’t really know much but it’s difficult.”
