France: Mourners mark anniversary of beheaded teacher's death outside former school

Mourners gathered outside Bois d’Aulne school in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine on Friday, to commemorate the one-year death anniversary of a teacher beheaded by an Islamist extremist.

A group was seen arriving by coach, before placing flowers in front of the former school of victim Samuel Paty.

“[We came here today] to show our solidarity with the victim’s family and to denounce all forms of violence,” said Imam Abdenour, stressing that Islam is a religion of peace.

Chems-Eddine Hafiz called on French political parties to stop conflating Islam with Islamism, which he deemed ‘a deadly ideology.’

On October 16, Paty was beheaded by an Islam extremist outside his workplace, after showing caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad during a class on freedom of speech two weeks prior.
