Amid a sharp increase in cases due to the omicron surge in France, Parisians and visitors alike had lined up for COVID tests on Friday.

Reasons for testing varied from COVID scare in close circles to precaution against the virus.

On Friday alone, France registered a record number of new infections with 333,317 cases. 200 people died with the virus on Friday to put France’s COVID-related death toll at 126,202 according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

SOT, Madja, Theater director (French): “There are only cases of contact (of COVID-19) around me of people who were negative but who became positive, which is very annoying, so we have to get tested. In addition I work in a theater, I run a big theater in Paris and there are a lot of artists who are positive.”

SOT, Laurent, Local resident (French): “I received an alert via the ‘Tous Anti-Covid’ application telling me that I was in contact (with someone with COVID-19), so I came to do a test.”

SOT, Evyne, Student (French): “I was not in contact (with anyone who has COVID-19), I am not necessarily afraid of the disease but tomorrow I have to do a professional project, so suddenly I have to do a test to access this project tomorrow.”

SOT, Anne, Tourist from Belgium (French): “We did not have the opportunity to do the complete vaccination for her (daughter). We have to do a test every day, so it is a bit of a shame because we only have two days of vacation here, so it’s a waste of time.”

SOT, Enzo, COVID-19 testing station worker (French): “There are a lot of tests at the moment and this morning in particular, the number of cases in France is increasing considerably day by day. Today we are at more than 400,000 new cases declared in France, so we are on a thing that does not stop. The peak is scheduled for January 15 or so, so by then cases will only increase.”
