France: Protesters march against racism through Paris

Thousands of protesters marched through the streets of Paris decrying racism to mark International Migrants Day, on Saturday.

Protesters could be seen with lit torches and anti-racism banners.

One protester, Olivier, said that economic reasons are behind immigration policies.

“We need immigration because there is work to be done and in this case we regulate part of it, but most of it we refuse to regulate it like that we allow illegal work on construction sites, for delivery people and so on,” he said.

French elections are taking place in 2022, with politicians using immigration policies to woo voters one way or another.

SOT, Laurene, Protester (French): “For me, racism is not only a question of hatred for the other, or of the rejection of difference, it is more anchored than that especially in France. For me there is a tradition of racism and when I say that I’m talking about the look we have on the world in fact, it’s a look of domination, of arrogance, but we don’t realise it.”

SOT, Olivier, Protester (French): “Of course there is racism in France, that is obvious, but there is a policy with regard to immigration which is completely driven by economic reasons. That is to say that, or we need immigration because there is work to be done and in this case we regulate part of it, but most of it we refuse to regulate it like that we allow illegal work on construction sites, for delivery people and so on.”

SOT, Oumeya, Protester (French): “If we really want to regulate migratory flows, I would say that we should act at the European level and intervene in countries where there are wars, where there are political crises, or climatic crises so that people have another choice rather than to migrate.”
