Public testing stands offered tests to pedestrians in Paris on Wednesday as the country recorded 208,000 cases over 24 hours, setting a grim new record for both France and Europe.
About a dozen pedestrians queued up in front of a public test stand next to a pharmacy on Place de la Republique. QR codes were hung up for them to sign up for the test. Medical staff provided treatment to those who wanted to take the test.
The number of new coronavirus infections detected in France within one day rose to around 208,000 on Wednesday. A daily peak of almost 180,000 new infections had only been reached on Tuesday.

SOT, Resident (French): “I do it for several reasons. While I spent Christmas with my family and we had tested before, during and just after, when I got out of the TGV, I had a doubt and then I am going to the USA tomorrow and therefore I really need it.”

SOT, Resident (French): “I just saw at the moment that the number of contaminations today is 200,000, it was 100,000 at Christmas so I think that the faster we act and we force people to be vaccinated, the faster we regain our freedoms.”

SOT, Michelle, Resident (French): “My grandchildren and my children are taking the test because they are contact cases of Christmas Eve nephews, so as they are positive, they take the test, they have no symptoms but as a precaution they take this test”.

SOT, Madda, Tourist: “We have to do the test to come back to Greece. Greek authorities ask for the test to enter the country and we came here for Christmas as tourists. That is why we are having the test.”

SOT, Nicola, Tourist (Italian): “The reason is because in order to return to Italy, the new legislation of December 16 practically asks for the Negative Test (PCR) otherwise it is not possible to return to Italy. We are vaccinated with the third dose of vaccine so we are covered, we hope.”
