France: Railway workers protest as Macron unveils new high-speed train at Paris station

Workers from the SudRail union rallied at the Gare de Lyon in Paris, Friday, to protest against French President Emmanuel Macron who was inside the station attending the 40th-anniversary celebration of the high-speed train service TGV.

Macron also unveiled the mock-up of the next generation of greener super high-speed TGV trains in the ceremony.

Railway workers attempted to approach the event but were impeded by police officers.

“They are trying to take over our history,” a protester said. “This is our history, it’s our history the TGV, it is our history the French railways. This was built whit the sweat and blood of railway workers. And it is them who are constantly putting at stake our working conditions and our salaries. And it is them who are trying to get hold of the history to make-believe, that we have nothing to do with it”, he added.

Macron promised major investments in the railway infrastructure in France as protesters gathered outside Gare de Lyon.

SOT, Striker (French): ” We have been banned from accessing [inaudible] by the security forces. This is monstrous, there are over 50 vans of the CRS units [French anti-riot police] outside. Macron tells is systematically come and see me. When we come to see him he is not there. He prefers to speak to the militants of the Republique en Marche party, these are no threat. But when he is faced with the railway workers, he would rather speak to the bourgeoisie.”
