France: Riot police deploy tear gas during Bastille Day demonstration

Riot police deployed tear gas to dispel a Bastille Day demonstration, following President Emmanuel Macron’s speech on COVID-19 restrictions and vaccination given the day before, in Paris on Wednesday.

Protesters could be seen kicking tear gas canisters back at police, as police pushed them away from the scene using riot shields.

During Macron’s speech, he strongly encouraged that people get vaccinated as soon as possible, as well as promising harsh restrictions for those unwilling to do so.

Although the speech provoked a rapid increase in the number of vaccination appointment bookings the following day, it also brought criticism from several groups, including the so-called ‘Yellow Vests’.
