Police deployed tear gas at an anti-fascist protest, as clashes broke out between demonstrators and riot police in Paris, on Saturday.

Anti-fascist groups called for the march against far-right movements, their ideas and discourse, as far-right TV personality and presidential hopeful Eric Zemmour has become a prominent figure ahead of the elections in April 2022.

Zemmour, who has gone on trial on charges of incitement to racial hatred, previously claimed that Islam and immigration are destroying France and that unaccompanied child migrants are ‘thieves, killers and rapists.’

Polls currently rank him as the second most popular figure in the election, behind French President Emmanuel Macron and ahead of National Rally leader Marine Le Pen. Although he has not yet officially announced his candidacy, he has said it was a ‘matter of days’ before he made the announcement.

Saturday’s protest comes after at least 27 people drowned off the coast of France near Calais on Wednesday, November 24, as a boat carrying migrants trying to reach the UK capsized in the English Channel.
