France: Thousands gather at Eiffel Tower for Olympic Games handover ceremony

Thousands of Parisians gathered near the Eiffel Tower on Sunday to celebrate as the Olympic Games were handed over from Tokyo to the French capital.

The country’s elite air display team, the Patrouille de France, flew over the gathering at the Jardins du Trocadero, leaving a trail of red, white and blue coloured smoke as Paris gears up to host the next Olympics.

The original plan to deploy a massive Olympic flag from the Eiffel Tower was discarded due to the strong winds at the time of the event.

The traditional ceremony of the Olympic flag handover takes place during the closing event of the Games, when it is handed to the mayor of the next host city. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is currently in the Japanese capital to take part in the closing ceremony. The next Olympic Games are set to take place in Paris in summer 2024.
