France: Thousands of firefighters march for better working conditions in Paris

Thousands of firefighters gathered on the streets of Paris on Friday to protest for better working conditions.

The protesters marched with flares and flags, demanding better pay, better resources and additional protection on the job.

“Of course, this is just the start. It’s not going to stop for sure! Our demands are numerous; the government has not responded,” said Abdallah Chaouch, a firefighter at the demonstration.

Riot police followed protesters during the march.

SOT, Djamel Edouard, Firefighter (French): “What we want today is for us to be heard. We have a profession of passion, of missions. We love what we do but it is time for us to be heard. Today, this is not the case.”

SOT, Abdallah Chaouch, Firefighter (French): “Of course, this is just the start. It’s not going to stop for sure! Our demands are numerous, the government has not responded. There are our representatives who are currently at the Ministry (of the Interior) discussing with them. We expect a strong speech from the government.”
