France: Hundreds march in Paris for better working conditions

France’s labour unions protested against what they deemed to be poor working conditions in Paris on Tuesday.

People also accused the government of using the coronavirus restrictions, implemented to curb the spread of the virus, to not allow unvaccinated workers to come to their workplace, as well as of causing difficulties in agreeing on routes for demonstrations.

Protesters marched through the streets with union flags, such as those of the CGT. Police was seen watching the demonstration.

SOT, Philippe Martinez, General Secretary of Confederation Generale du Travail CGT (French): “The government restricts the rights of workers, one example is this demonstration, it was necessary to wait practically a day before we knew which route in the streets was going to be authorised. We also have difficulties to organise mobilisations, including in the companies under the pretext of health reasons, and then there are employees, and we’ve been saying this from the start, who, because they have not been vaccinated, they can no longer work so we are with these employees to find legal answers so that they can regain their rights.”

SOT, Myriam, Employee of Psychiatric Hospital APHP Paris 19 (French): “We need hospital beds at the Hospital, we must stop removing hospital beds. We have to pay people properly, for example psychologists, are paid € 1,475 per month and there are other professionals who are very poorly paid. We really need better remuneration and additional resources for the hospital, more hospital beds in particular.”
