France: Wrapped Arc de Triomphe fulfills wishes of late artist Christo

The iconic Arc de Triomphe in Paris has been shrouded in fabric as part of an art installation project, in honour of the late artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, as seen on Saturday.

Pedestrians crowded to see the artwork, which featured 25,000 square metres (82,020 square foot) of recyclable polypropylene fabric draped over the Parisian monument, completely covering it.

“I am here for Christo, for what will be his last piece,” said local Resident Henn. “I believe that his piece changes all the time depending on the lighting, that is what is special.”

Resident Phillippe 63, described how he had seen Christo’s work on Pont Neuf 35 years prior, whilst still in his twenties.

Christo and Jeanne Claude were renowned for their large-scale, site-specific artworks, which included wrapping monuments such as the Pont Neuf and Germany’s Reichstag in fabric.

The installation is due to remain for 16 days, until October 3.
