Georgian Special Penitentiary Service published a video of ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili packing his things in the Rustavi prison before being transferred to the prison hospital, Monday.

“Due to high public interest, we publish footage of prisoner Mikheil Saakashvili’s departure from the 12th penitentiary, where it is obvious that prisoner Mikheil Saakashvili did not leave the prison against his will,” the service stated.

Georgian Ombudsman Nino Lomjaria also paid a visit to the 18th medical institution where the third president of Georgia was transferred. According to her, the ex-president was confident that he would be transferred to a civilian clinic, on which the lawyers initially insisted.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmila Denisova said Saakashvili had no intention of moving to prison hospital in colony No. 18, despite his deteriorating health condition, as he “believes that it is not safe for his life there.”

Saakashvili was detained on October 1. He had previously been placed on the domestic wanted list in connection with the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of MP Valery Gelashvili, for which he had been sentenced in absentia to three and six years’ imprisonment respectively.

While in jail, Saakashvili went on hunger strike, describing himself as a political prisoner.

On November 6 the Georgian Justice Ministry’s Special Penitentiary Service published footage on Facebook showing Saakashvili eating food surrounded by doctors.
