Georgia: Thousands bid farewell to journalist Lekso Lashkarava at Tbilisi funeral

The funeral of TV Pirveli cameraman Lekso Lashkarava took place in Tbilisi, on Tuesday. Thousands attended the ceremony, including journalists, political party leaders and members of the public.

People were seen following the funeral procession and applauding Lashkarava on his last journey.

Lekso Lashkarava was found dead in his home on July 11, after he was beaten while covering a march of anti-LGBT groups on July 5.

On Sunday, thousands gathered in Tbilisi to protest Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and his government, saying he and the ruling Georgian Dream party had enabled violence against journalists.

Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has launched an investigation into Lashkarava’s death under the article of driving to suicide. On Monday evening, officials from the Ministry of Internal Affairs the cause of Lashkarava’s death could be a drug overdose, during a briefing.

In turn, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased, promising “the Ministry of Internal Affairs will provide full-fledged information to the public as soon as possible.”
