Dozens of mourners gathered at Oranienplatz, Berlin, on Saturday, in a vigil held in memory of those killed in the 2019 Halle synagogue attack.
Attendees held candles during the ceremony, whilst organisers conducted a minute of silence for the attack victims.
“Two years ago on Yom Kippur that feeling [of rebirth] was obviously more intense, because I feel like my life was provided to me, but it came at the cost of other people’s lives who were killed, who took bullets that were intended for me,” said survivor Ezra, speaking regarding the day of the attack.
On October 9, 2019, a man opened fire at individuals in the vicinity of a synagogue in the eastern German city of Halle, after failing to gain entry to the building where 52 people were celebrating Yom Kippur. He was sentenced to life in prison in December 2020, after being charged with two counts of murder with ‘anti-Semitic, racist and xenophobic’ intention by a regional court.

SOT, Ezra, Survivor of 2019 Halle synagogue attack: “Two years ago on Yom Kippur that feeling [of rebirth] was obviously more intense, because I feel like my life was provided to me, but it came at the cost of other people’s lives who were killed, who took bullets that were intended for me. And that just makes the theme of Yom Kippur that much more intense, and the holiday is that much more intense every year going forward because of that [terror attack].’‘
