A foreign ministry spokesperson commented on the recent suspension of flights at Ramstein air base, stating that it is a ‘common goal’ of the EU and US to resume the evacuation of vulnerable Afghans, during a conference in Berlin on Wednesday.

Foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Adebahr stated that the flights are currently suspended due to ‘health precautions,’ adding, “it’s our common goal that the flights will be resumed as soon as possible, and that the vulnerable Afghans can safely travel to their goal country.”

The statement came as the US halted inbound flights from Afghanistan, following a measles outbreak among evacuees in Virginia and Wisconsin.

Five reportedly arrived with the disease as of Tuesday, according to The Virginia Department of Health.

Adebahr also noted the resumption of Kabul-bound flights by Pakistani airlines, stating that she hoped it would be possible for the EU and US to resume ‘civil operation’ of Kabul airport, in order to evacuate those from vulnerable groups.

SOT, Maria Adebahr, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “Yes, the current situation is that the flights are still suspended because of health precautions. We stay in close contact with our American partners, and it’s our common goal that the flights will be resumed as soon as possible, and that the vulnerable Afghans can safely travel to their goal country, which also means not exposing those who travel with them to any danger. We continue these talks, and we hope that this short-term suspension for health care measures that we’re witnessing will not affect our basic agreement on the temporary the use of Ramstein. We also hope to, and are working towards, being able to clarify this as quickly as possible and get it out of the way, so that the flights can be resumed.”

SOT, Maria Adebahr, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “In our crisis reaction centre, we work quite intensively to make it possible to leave the country for the affected groups, and for Germans that are still in the country. To respond to what was asked previously, it’s a three-digit number, the local forces and the special group of vulnerable individuals. How can this operation be performed? There are basically two ways to make it possible, and one of them is civil operation of the airport. We have had a very intensive dialogue with Qatar regarding the matter, and Qataris have already flown there in the past few days, thus we have already been able to evacuate 60 people on Qatar flights. Pakistani airlines have also resumed their first flights, which means that there is intensive contact, and we hope and that civil operation of the airport will also be possible for us, making the departure of vulnerable people and people belonging to those three groups possible, too.”

SOT, Maria Adebahr, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “From the foreign ministry, I can tell you that we have taken note of the talks between Russia and the Mali government, and also the latest media reports about possible bilateral military cooperation. On this issue, we are in constant dialogue with our European partners, and of course with France as well, and in Bamako we talk about the whole range of bilateral and multilateral cooperation of [Afghanistan] with the EU or with third countries. In his statement on the subject, the French foreign minister actually referred to a possible cooperation between Mali and private mercenaries, and we find the possibility of such cooperation extremely worrying, that’s out of the question. And that is why we are in a close exchange with our French partners.”
