Afghanistan: Evacuation efforts at Kabul airport continue in race against deadline

Efforts to airlift foreign nationals and Afghans as part of the ongoing evacuation operation at Kabul’s airport continued on Wednesday.

Thousands of people have been trying to flee Afghanistan since August 15 when the capital fell to the Taliban.

According to a US military spokesperson, a plane departed the airport, on average, every 39 minutes.

The airport has seen days of chaos with people desperately trying to get to the facility through Taliban checkpoints and board one of the evacuation flights.

US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that the US is “on pace” to finish withdrawing from Afghanistan by 31 August.
