Taliban flags were seen on the streets of Jalalabad on Tuesday as markets and shops continued trading one week after Taliban takeover.

Businesses reopened in their dozens and markets returned to life. Armed men patrolled the city in pickup trucks flying the Taliban’s Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan flag.

Thousands of people have tried to flee Afghanistan since August 15 when Kabul fell to the Taliban, as Afghans fear reprisals and a return to authoritarian rule.

Kabul’s airport has seen days of chaos with people desperately trying to get inside the airport through Taliban checkpoints and board one of the Western evacuation flights.
