Germany: Arrests as COVID protesters rally in Saxony city

Anti-COVID restriction protesters rallied in the Saxony city of Bautzen on Monday, despite authorities banning demonstrations following escalating violence over the several past rallies.

Hundreds of protesters could be seen marching through the streets before holding a demo on Kornmarkt in the city centre, before police arrested some attendees. Authorities state the restrictions have been put in place in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.

In his New Year’s address, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pleaded with the public to take restrictions seriously as the country battles the more transmissible Omicron variant and a record-breaking number of infections.

Germany has around 71.2 percent of its population fully vaccinated, the lowest rate in western Europe after Switzerland and the UK.
