Interior ministry spokesperson Steve Alter announced that arrivals from South Africa must undergo a PCR test, as well as quarantine, upon arrival into the country, during a government press conference on Monday.
“Those who come to Germany from South Africa must go into 14 days quarantine. What’s new is that upon entry one must undergo a PCR test, which means the passengers of these flights are directed to a special area in the airports - here in Germany meaning at Frankfurt and Munich airports - where the PCR test are run, and after the test result further decisions will be made,” said Alter.
Alter elaborated that those who receive a positive result must quarantine at a hotel near to the airports, whilst travellers who receive a negative result may quarantine at home.
“All travellers are obliged to get tested again on the 5th and on the 13th day. There is no possibility to test themselves within those 14 days,” Alter continued.
As a response to the emergence of the new COVID-19 variant, nicknamed Omicron, the European Commission on Friday announced a new set of restrictions on access into the EU from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique and Namibia. In a similar move, the UK added ten countries to its red list.
On Friday, 61 flight passengers out of approximately 600 arriving to Amsterdam from South Africa tested positive for coronavirus, 13 of whom were confirmed to have the Omicron variant.

Christopher Burger, Foreign ministry spokesperson (German): “On that I can tell you that the department head of the foreign ministry and of the BmWi [UNINTELLIGIBLE] were recently in Washington and have held there constructive talks with high-rank representatives of the US government and of the US congress. We continue to coordinate closely with the US administration on the implementation of the joint statement. And we have regular and constructive exchanges at various levels. Our position to sanctions is known, we fundamentally reject sanctions among allies, so this should not come as a surprise.”

SOT, Steve Alter, Interior ministry spokesperson (German): “If the test is positive, the health department decides on an accommodation. One can expect that one would be brought into quarantine hotels in the proximity of the airports or in any case in the surrounding area. If the test is negative, one can go into domestic quarantine. And all travellers are obliged to get tested again on the 5th and on the 13th day. There is no possibility to test themselves within those 14 days.”
SOT, Steffen Seibert, Government spokesperson (German): “We still know very little about this variant Omicron and naturally we still don’t have enough knowledge on how the currently used vaccines concretely work. And now we must - and that will happen in no time - now we are to wait for the investigation. Regarding the variant, it is surely an element that has come into the pandemic situation and that makes everything even more serious.”
