Germany: Bavarian IntMin Hermann meets with evacuated Afghans at Bamberg reception centre

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Hermann met with evacuated Afghans at a reception centre in Bamberg on Monday.

“I would like to warmly welcome you here in the Free State of Bavaria on behalf of everyone who has come to Bamberg. And assure you, yes, you are now safe here,” said Hermann. According to the minister, 98 people have already arrived at the facility in the Bavarian city, including 21 families with young children.

One young Afghan man who had worked with German forces in his country described his gratitude towards Berlin for his evacuation, saying that they had ‘saved’ the lives of his family.

Hermann was joined by Bamberg’s mayor, Andreas Starke, as well as other members of the Christian Social Union (CSU) on the visit.

According to the German Interior Ministry, Germany’s airlift brought 3,849 Afghans out of the country, including 634 local workers.

SOT, Joachim Hermann, Bavarian Interior Minister (German): “It was not until last Thursday that another horrific attack was carried out in Kabul and we then learn daily from the news of further attack attempts. It is a more than difficult situation. In particular, former local staff who have worked for the Federal Republic of Germany or other of our allies, and their families, must obviously fear the revenge of the Taliban.”

SOT, Afghan refugee (German): “As I had contacts with comrades in the German Army, also with the German embassy in Kabul. I spoke with them and they told me ‘Stay calm, we will evacuate you, and so they did.”

SOT, Afghan refugee (German): “I am thankful to Germany and the German embassy, as well as the comrades at the German army. They saved our lives.”
