Germany: Berlin autobahn bridge blocked by abseiling climate activists

Environmentalists abseiled from a bridge over a major motorway in Berlin on Friday, blocking traffic along the A103 for over 30 minutes in protest against the expansion of Germany’s motorways, and calling for better climate protection.

A dozen activists from climate change organisations Sand in the Gearbox and Bund Jugend gathered on the bridge overlooking the A103 in the German capital’s Friedenau district, rallying under the slogan, “For climate protection & traffic change instead of criminalisation of activists.”

Two participants abseiled from the bridge over the motorway, unfurling a large banner bearing the message “Hanging out is not a crime.” Friday’s action was registered in advance and carried out under the watch of a large police presence. For safety reasons, both the A103 motorway section around Steglitz-Zugringer as well as the bridge were closed to traffic.

According to Berlin police spokesperson Martin Halweg, around 70 officers were on duty, some of whom were equipped with climbing gear in case the activists got into trouble while abseiling.
The protesters are calling for improved rail transport services and a faster incorporation of renewable energies into the German economy, but also the release of their fellow activist Ella, who has been in jail for over a year demonstrating against the expansion of the A49 motorway in Dannenroder forest.

Ella is now appealing her sentence, with proceedings underway in a district court in the town of Giessen.
