Germany: Berlin to step up issuing visas for Afghans in neighbouring countries - FM spox

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Germany was stepping up efforts to provide Afghans with humanitarian visas in neighbouring countries, speaking at a news conference in Berlin on Wednesday.

“We know this will be a very big task because there are a very large number of people who we would like to allow entry to Germany, that’s why we will need to build up additional capacities, not only for document checks or document issue, but also far many logistical questions, and we are working intensively on that,” said Christofer Burger.

He added that additional staff was being deployed to diplomatic missions in neighbouring countries after Germany wrapped its evacuations from the Kabul airport.

It has proven itself in Germany that the essential working conditions are not regulated by the state but by the collective bargaining partners and therefore the Chancellor does not interfere in these disputes, but she hopes that in this tariff conflict at the railway there will be quickly found a solution that is viable for all sides. And the whole federal government appeals to the negotiating partners that they, also with regard of the pandemic, would limit the negative effects on passengers to the inevitable level.”

SOT, Christofer Burger, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “As you know, the Foreign Minister has held talks in three neighbouring states of Afghanistan in the last few days exactly about the question of how we can organise it all so, that people who have a guarantee of protection from us can safely get to our representations in these countries. A part of the delegation stayed on the ground in Tashkent, for example, in order to move on with these negotiations as quickly as possible and to come to an agreement, and we continue to work very intensively on that.”

SOT, Teresa Nauber, Health Ministry spokesperson (German): “He [Health Minister] said, that he can imagine that employers will have right to ask their employees about the vaccination status, as it’s already done in restaurants. Literally the Minister said ‘if everyone in an open space office is vaccinated, then it can be dealt with differently than if there are only 50% vaccinated.’ But as my colleague has already said, here the Infection Protection Act would have to be changed and that should be decided by the German Bundestag.”

SOT, Steffen Seibert, German government spokesperson, (German): “At the moment it’s so that the employees can voluntary inform their employer about the vaccination status. The employers can then, so to say, take this information into account when organising the company’s infection protection. At the moment there is no legal right to request information, and from what was discussed today during corona cabinet there are no any change coming, but the federal government is checking whether the change is necessary at the point. And about how and where that could happen and be decided, the colleagues have just explained that.”

SOT, Christofer Burger, Foreign Ministry spokesperson (German): “Yes, we have taken note of this report. Our position on the negotiations in Vienna we have repeatedly made clear, we emphatically urge Iran to return to constructive dialogue and to the negotiating table as soon as possible, we are ready, but the time window for negotiations won’t stay open forever.”
