Berliners voiced their concerns over a spike in local COVID-19 cases in the capital on Saturday, after the district of Kreuzberg-Friedrichshain became Germany’s top coronavirus hotspot.

Several residents said they had taken the necessary precautions against the virus, like wearing masks and getting vaccinated, but wished others would take the measures seriously.

“Of course I’m always wearing a mask. I’m also boostered. And I think it would be great if everyone else would do it. To take the vaccination seriously. And wearing a mask is very, very important,” said resident Martha.

However, another Berliner said they felt “too restricted” by new coronavirus measures, saying she wasn’t sure if the restrictions are “really necessary.”

Four Berlin districts have recorded incidences of more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the past seven days. Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg has the highest level of coronavirus cases nationwide, with its incidence rising from 1520.7 to 1586.6.

As of Saturday, tighter restrictions apply in Berlin, the so called 2G+ measures, meaning entry to bars, restaurants and pubs are only permitted with a negative test not older than 24 hours for the vaccinated and recovered. Those with boosters are exempt.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Ariona, Berlin resident (German): “So we do are afraid now star the incidence is high. That’s why I’m walking around with a mask on, work from home, but apart from that I try to keep distance to people. Yes, it is a bit intimidating. Nevertheless I try to get out and take fresh air, though I go there where there are fewer people. For example, today I was in Grunewald. I try to sit alone in the train. But yes.”

SOT Martha, Berlin resident (German): “Yes, so of course I’m always wearing a mask. I’m also boostered. And I think it would be great if everyone else would do it. To take the vaccination seriously. And wearing a mask is very, very important, I find. Definitely. Apart from that, we just have to wait what’s coming next and how the situation will evolve. But… I do it like this.”

SOT Leon, Berlin resident (German): “Yes, so from the start on we have always taking precautions, not to be around 50,000 people during large events in summer. Now we are getting both a booster shot. And apart from that, we can’t do much more without falling out of life.”

SOT, Nina, Berlin resident (German): “And regarding masks, of course we are always wearing it and watch out for it. But changing something, basically if you always take care of that, then…”

SOT, Ute, Berlin resident (German): “Yes, I do feel too restricted. So I can go to a restaurant, but if I want to visit the swimming pool I need to think about getting tested. I don’t know if this whole story is really necessary, the way we are dealing with it at the moment.”
