Residents of Berlin reacted on Friday to the new restrictions imposed by the German government to combat COVID-19, coming into effect Saturday.

The new regulations include evidence of a booster shot on top of a vaccination or a test in order to gain access to bars and restaurants.

Residents were overall positive about the changes. “Yeah my life will not change that much. I have the vaccination. I can do tests any time at my work, so I don’t find it to be such a big thing,” stated one Berlin local.

The number of COVID-19 cases in Germany has been increasing consistently for 12 days.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Katya, Berlin resident (German): “Honestly said, nothing. Because the safety measures often change, and no one carries them through or knows what’s current.”

SOT, Mario, Berlin resident (German): “Currently I don’t go often into pubs, bars, clubs.”

SOT, Mario, Berlin resident (German): “Yeah so many also don’t know, in the meantime I look through, but lastly when I know where I am going, I just ask what is needed. That’s the best case.”
Katya, Berlin Resident (German): “As far as I know it’s 2G+ in the pubs, locals or in bars. In the meantime they are still open, which I find great. Honestly said, I don’t know more.”

SOT, Iman, Berlin resident (German): “So I heard over the last few days because I still go to school that if one does not have the booster, the third vaccination that one must have a test, also when one is just vaccinated twice. When one doesn’t have a test with them then one may not go in. So from now it’s just the 2G+.”

SOT, Iman, Berlin resident (German): “Not so clear. So many say different things from the others. The rules are regulated. Many don’t know a lot from that.”

SOT, Atzi, Berlin resident (German): “The problem is the rules change very quickly and often. That one doesn’t know what it means. I had it a lot when one meets with other people that we have these questions about what the new rules are and then we must look it up. It’s really hard.”

SOT, Verena, Tourist: “I’m just pleased that I’ve been able to come to Berlin and have a holiday, which has been brilliant. I think it probably will encourage more people to get boostered, for example my son has only had two injections and it might encourage him to have another one.”
