Germany: Berlin's new govt coalition outlines plans for "capital of the future"

Berlin’s representatives of the Red-Red-Green coalition presented plans for the new city government at a press conference in the German capital on Monday, envisioning what they called the “capital of the future.”

The representatives of the SPD, the Greens and Die Linke, including Elected-Mayor Franziska Giffey took up the most important points of the political agenda, highlighting the issues of security, digitalisation, health, education, civil rights and housing and affordable rents, which have also become the focus of attention due to a referendum that took place in September’s general elections.

“I am pleased that we have been able to increase social housing promotion by 500 million euros per year compared to the 2021 budget and that we will thus be able to provide the corresponding promotion in the lower and medium price segments,” said Giffey.

“We have to rebuild Berlin in such a way that it becomes the capital city of the future, that it remains climate-neutral and business-friendly, and that the economy remains strong, and that it becomes even more attractive and social within this city, and that it becomes even more diverse and tolerant,” Green’s Berlin MP Warner Graf added.

To this end, we will see to it that the district offices are better equipped, that the police, fire brigade, and judiciary are further strengthened, that we bring the change in transport to the streets, and that we further strengthen urban society to become more diverse, because this will make Berlin the capital of the future.”

SOT, Nina Stahr, Green MP (German): “We are still dealing with the COVID crisis and we are in the middle of the climate crisis. We have to rebuild the economy after COVID. We have wanted to build a growing economy, and I am firmly convinced that we have all realised that these discussions were not about always pushing through one’s point of view but about finding the best solution together.”

SOT, Katina Schubert, Member of Berlin House of Representatives for Die Linke (German): “Against the background that the federal government will, unfortunately, do very little, as we can see from the coalition agreement - I assume this is due to the FDP - it is all the more important that we show here in Berlin that other ways are possible and that the topic of rent regulation is just as important to us as the topic of new construction of affordable housing and it is also important that the will of the Berliners could be anchored in over 1 million people in Berlin on the socialisation of large housing portfolios of large listed companies and we will do everything we can to implement this people’s decision for the future.”
